The meaning of Okpanko

 


Okpankpo is an institution made up of well cultured and mannerd and matured men in Arochukwu, dedicated to education, public service, culture or the care of the destitute.

In Arochukwu the major work of the okpanko people is decision making, they are the ones who finalizes issue after much deliberations, they are the ones who analyzes most decision taken by various villages or people and as such knowing how beneficial or destructive it may bring. 


The institution, Okpanko was created  by the late Eze Aro, Mazi Kanu Oji,  who is believed to not just being a king but he is one of the longest reigning monarchs in Nigeria, he ruled 73 years which while trying to calculate it, he ascended the throne in the year 1914 and descended in the year 1987.


The former Eze Aro designed the Okpanko group in such a way that It's members were to be selected among traditional village heads, some prominent knowledgeable administrators within Arochukwu kingdom, some leadership of Unions who are also knowledgeable on Aro issues, they were to be advisers to Eze Aro.

After some years of existence, the Okpanko's became the top and most respected traditional institution that takes decisions, make sure that it is being carried without any form of fear or favour. 


The institution Okpanko is designed to have one general head who organizes, harnesses and instructs others who also are members of the body, on this note, Okpanko is being guided by Arochukwu number one citizen which is Eze Aro.
